Nyalam, Tibet

Namaste Dear Family & Friends

Yesterday, we drove to the border of Nepal & Tibet and stayed in a village on the Nepal side of the border since there was not enough time to cross the border. The journey up the mountain roads to the border was, as always, rough. The roads are narrow and bad, with much of the travel on dirt and rocky roads.

Early this morning, we crossed the Friendship Bridge into Tibet. We bypassed Zangmu and drove straight to Nyalam. It snowed hard when we got to Nyalam and snowed most of the day today.  In the morning, we went on a short acclimatization hike before the snow started to fall.

The accommodations are pretty bad. No heat in the rooms, which are small and dirty. Television is out of the question. The food is pretty good-a lot of rice and vegetables.

I have a good team. I will talk more about the team members later. One trekker from Hungary returned to Kathmandu this morning. I understand the overall conditions were a bit too much of a shock for this trekker.

Tomorrow morning, we drive to Tinghri, which is our last stop before Chinese Base Camp. We will spend two days in Tinghri.

I feel terrific.

My next post will be from Tonghri.
